WATCH: Is public money being used wisely?

Tuesday 01 August 2023

Is taxpayers' money being used wisely? This is the question a panel of politicians will be aiming to answer as part of its newly launched review of the States Annual Report and Accounts for 2022.

Launched on Monday, the review aims to examine whether public funds have been used as intended and whether sound financial practices have been followed.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said its main areas of focus would be:

  • the accuracy, transparency and timeliness of the States Annual Report and Accounts 2022, including whether the Performance Report contained therein presents clearly the Government's performance;

  • whether previously recommendations made by the External Auditors of the States of Jersey have been taken into account; and

  • the reporting of risk and mitigations thereof.

"As part of its role, the PAC evaluates whether public funds have been utilised for their intended purpose by the States of Jersey, including Government Departments, Non-Ministerial Departments, funds, and some subsidiary companies," the Committee's Chair, Deputy Lyndsay Feltham, commented.

"Therefore, it is crucial that we review these documents, to ensure that the Jersey taxpayer not only understands what they should be expecting from the reports, but that they are also receiving the service that they should expect."
