ART FIX: The power of light! Celebrating 21 years of the Harbour Gallery

Friday 17 November 2023

Jersey's Harbour Gallery is tonight celebrating 21 years since it lit up the island's arts scene.

Every Friday, Express presents a selection of exhibitions, performances, workshops, events, and other historic, creative, and delicious content to help islanders get their weekly dose of culture.

Here's this week's offering...

Rock out to rebuild!

A local pop-punk band is hosting a concert to raise money for those impacted by Storm Ciarán this evening – inspired by a viral video of their friend's window being shattered by severe winds while she slept next to her baby.

The event is being hosted by 88 Bunkface at the Blue Note Bar tonight, with all money raised going towards the Bailiff's Appeal.

Additional details can be found on the Facebook event HERE.

Donations can be made at the door, with a suggested minimum of £5. Raffle tickets can be purchased for £2.

The Power of Light

The Harbour Gallery will also be celebrating its 21st birthday this evening with an exhibition called 'The Power of Light'.

Canapes, birthday cake and drinks will be served.

Organisers said: "Our first exhibition at The Harbour Gallery St Aubin was titled 'The Power of Light', marking a new era in the Jersey art world.

"Relocating to our new 'home' earlier this year with the inspirational light shining into our workspaces.

"'The Power of Light' seems a most appropriate theme for our 21st birthday exhibition."

International Waters

Today is your last chance to see Tim Le Breuilly's exhibition of paintings and etchings at CCA Galleries.

Taking inspiration from real, imagined or local places, Tim's new works assimilate human emotion, memory and personal experience into landscapes and seascapes.

The compositions he portrays may be drawn from the real world, harkening back to familiar locations or distant travel destinations, or they might be born from the depths of his imagination, materialised into existence to encapsulate the essence of a feeling.

Regardless of their origin, these landscapes become a blank canvas for the viewer's own imagination, allowing them to wander through the artist's emotional terrain.

The show will continue until Friday 17 November. Find out more HERE

Shared Light

An exhibition of photographs taken by female prisoners at HMP La Moye has opened, offering an insight into inmates’ daily lives – with images exploring themes of hope amid an overarching sense of confinement.

Fences, wires, and a muted colour palette are set against hopeful subjects, including a feminine sense of solidarity, flowers tended to by prisoners in the garden, and the “colourful” sky viewed by inmates who often gaze up into it.

Shared Light runs in the Arts Centre’s Berni Gallery until 6 December.

Fidel Fourneyron jazz concert

Trombone player and composer Fidel Fourneyron and his trio will be performing West African-inspired jazz at the Greve de Lecq Barracks next weekend, supported by a local fado duo playing Portuguese songs.

This is part of a short residency at Art House Jersey organised with Normandy's Sous Les Pommiers Festival, an annual week-long jazz festival in France.

Organisers said: "Joined by Antoine Paganotti on drums and Thibaud Soulas on double bass with the breath of Fidel Fourneyron's trombone, Oko promises a captivating and pulsating sound that takes us on a journey from contemporary European jazz to forge a whole different connection to the earth and the rhythms that shape us."

The event will be held at Greve de Lecq Barracks on Friday 24 November from 19:00 until 21:00.

Believe in Magic

Local artists Kathy Rondel and Michele Snape draw inspiration from their natural surroundings in their new exhibition, 'Believe in Magic'.

Kathy said: “I am a collector of the small, seemingly insignificant things that others might overlook and with an ever growing collection of leaves, seeds, shells, stones and suchlike.”

Their showcase is inspired by the words of Ronald Dahl: “Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are aways hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

It will run daily between the 4 and 25 November, from 10:00 until 16:00, excluding Sundays, at The Merchants House.

Men-ships

Each Thursday this month, as part of Men’s Health Month, The Harbour Gallery is offering space for men to learn new skills, make friends and improve their mental wellbeing to try to help combat social isolation and foster a sense of community.

Events at the Harbour Gallery are priced at £10 per session or £40 for five sessions, which includes a drink and a fun activity each week, such as cooking, music, and photography.

Places can be booked by emailing info@theharbourgalleryjersey.com or calling 743044.

CANCELLED: St Martin's Bonfire

Heavy rainfall and the after-effects of Storm Ciarán have led to the cancellation of this year’s St Martin's Bonfire.

After twice moving the date of the annual bonfire and accompanying fireworks display, organisers have admitted defeat and called off the event entirely for 2023.

Lester Richardson, President of the organising committee, said the weather forecast was not encouraging and that it had been reluctantly decided that the event couldn't go ahead.
