More than £1 million has been spent on lawyers for Brecqhou owner Sir Frederick Barclay in a long-running divorce row, a court heard yesterday.
Barrister Stewart Leech KC, who represents his ex-wife, who represents Lady Hiroko Barclay, said: “It is astonishing that so much has been spent on lawyers to thwart Lady Barclay getting what she is entitled to.”
He also told the judge that Sir Frederick had arrived at the hearing “in style”, driven in a Range Rover parked in the judges’ car park.
The comments came during the latest round of a legal proceedings in the Family Division of the High Court in London.
Aidan Barclay, Sir Frederick’s nephew, testified yesterday. He said that his uncle’s martial issues weren’t good for the family, but that they were “not really my issue”.
Following Mr Barclay and Lady Barclay’s divorce, Sir Barclay was ordered to pay Lady Barclay £100 million in lump sums. Sir Barclay was found to be in contempt after failing to pay about £245,000. Lady Barclay's legal representatives have previously argued for his committal to prison – but this push was paused in February when the retired mogul made a mystery "proposal".
In February, Sir Jonathan told Sir Frederick that it was “absolutely essential” his ex-wife should be “properly provided for”.
Mr Barclay is one of the 'Barclay Twins', a pair of British billionaires said to be worth £7 billion prior to Sir David Barclay's death in 2021. The pair purchased the Channel Island of Brecqhou, off the Coast of Sark in 1993.
The hearing has been adjourned until later this week.
