An Iranian asylum seeker was found hiding in the boot of a car off the boat to Jersey from France on Saturday morning.
In a case that is the first of its kind in Jersey, a 28-year-old woman from Leeds is accused of helping the man – her brother-in-law – enter the island as an illegal immigrant.
Amanda Marreakhy appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, after the Court heard that her disabled brother-in-law had been staying at the Calais refugee camp nicknamed “The Jungle” for the last 12 weeks.
Mrs Marreakhy was remanded in custody overnight ahead of a further court appearance this morning.
Her charge sheet describes the offence as “being knowingly concerned in the making or carrying out arrangements for securing, or facilitating, the entry into the Bailiwick of Jersey of anyone whom she knows, or had reasonable cause for believing to be an illegal immigrant."
