‘Au revoir’ to CocoRico

A French café, that has 'amused the bouches' of islanders for almost 10 years is bidding a fond ‘au revoir,’ to Jersey’s high street due to increasing competition and the impact of Brexit.

First opening in French Lane in 2011, CocoRico has announced that it will be leaving its Broad Street home to begin a new chapter catering for events, and perhaps coming back in a new form.

The creperie café sells authentic French treats – both savoury and sweet – and aimed to tell the, “simple love story between one man and his food."

Express caught up with that man, Sébastien Perrais, the Brittany-born brain behind CocoRico, about his decision to shut up shop after almost a decade of this passion project.

Speaking about his decision to close the Broad Street café, Sébastien said: “It was a tough decision, but I have to do it,” explaining that “the food industry has changed."

Elaborating on these changes, the entrepreneur told Express that part of the problem is the increased levels of competition: “Lots of offices moved to the Esplanade and too many coffee shops opened in a short time and created a very strong competition.  

“Everywhere you look now is food, there is no limit from the state to control the number – even some retail shops have a section with food and drinks, it’s just too much.” 

Sébastien admitted he’s also concerned about the impact that Brexit will have on his business. 

“Brexit will also have an big impact on all food importation which is 60% of my purchases in French ingredients.” 

On a more personal level, he said that he “need[s] a new challenge after ten years".

Although Sébastien described the move as “a shame”, he hopes “it will open to something new and even better".

On his fondest memories of the business, Sébastien reminisced about his very early days at the café: “Making a dream come true is incredible and I will never forget my first day ten years ago when I was in French Lane for the first time running my business. I was proud and scared.

“Being known for quality food was my priority and I am glad to have this reputation.” 

In terms of the biggest challenge he faced, Sébastien said that this was “to set up the business in a foreign country. I was lucky to have great support from Jersey Enterprise and the Parish.”

He added: “Opening a business isn’t easy and I have big respect for all people who take the risk and follow their passion.”

To the loyal customers he’s served over the years, Sébastien wanted to say: “I feel so lucky to have the same customers from the start. Some came as a couple six years ago and now come with their kids, some became friends. I can’t thank them enough for all their support.

“I won’t mention those who came just to follow the fashion and moved to the next trendy place to be seen!” 

Looking ahead to what’s next for him and the CocoRico brand, Sébastien said: “I will still be catering and you will see me during some summer events. CocoRico is still alive, I just need to change the concept.”

In its current form, CocoRico’s last day on Broad Street is this Thursday (27 February).
