BBC journalist and care leaver to speak at Le Rocquier School

Sunday 10 November 2024

A BBC journalist, author and care leaver visiting the island next week to share his inspirational story.

Ashley John-Baptiste will be discussing his memoir 'Looked After: A Childhood in Care', and the importance of resilience, education and support for care-experienced youth at Le Rocquier School Auditorium on Thursday 14 November from 18:00.

The event is organised by the Children, Young People and Education Services (CYPES) and the Jersey Festival of Words.

Published in June, 'Looked After: A Childhood in Care' is an honest memoir of Mr John-Baptiste's childhood and provides an insight into care provision, including how race and masculinity intersect.

He first gained public recognition as a member of band The Risk on the X Factor, making headlines when he left the show to pursue his passion for journalism.

Now an accomplished BBC journalist, Mr John-Baptiste has covered major events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and earned a nomination for Young Talent of the Year at the RTS Television Journalism Awards.

Born in South London, he faced a challenging childhood, entering foster care at age four and moving between multiple homes and schools.

Despite these obstacles, Mr John-Baptiste's academic talent led him to study history at Cambridge University, where he graduated with honours and mentored other care-experienced students.

Signed copies of his book will be available for purchase.

Tickets can be purchased for £7 HERE.
