Big crowd gathers for start of Touch European Championships

Friday 08 July 2016

Over a thousand spectators from all over Europe joined Islanders at Les Quennevais to watch this year's Touch European Championships kick off.

Day one of the Touch European Championships has been dominated by the UK Home nations and French sides, who are consistently battling it out at the top of the various category pools, but there is good local news for Mourant Ozannes Jersey Men’s 40s who are challenging towards the top of their group following a tight 4-3 victory over Scotland 45s.

The other Mourant Ozannes Jersey sides have a lot to do after difficult starts against tough opposition, with a 6-1 victory for the Mixed Open side over local rivals Guernsey being the highlight so far.

The prolific scorers on the opening day were the Welsh Men’s Open side, who ran in 18 tries and 16 tries against Belgium and Luxembourg respectively. A tougher fixture against England tomorrow afternoon might be a fixture to look out for on Day two.

The top performing Women’s side was the French Women’s Open team, who romped to 8-2 and 15-3 victories against Scotland and Italy respectively.

Mourant Ozannes Jersey’s Senior Mixed side have it all to do tomorrow after narrow defeats to Ireland and England have left them towards the bottom of their pool, which has been dominated by England and France.

You'll find all the results from the first day of action here.

The players are back in action at 9am and you can follow the results and updates on the tournament Twitter page - @Jerseytouch.
