Bike thefts: lock it or lose it!

17 bikes were stolen in January in Jersey - nearly six times more than the previous year.

The States of Jersey Police are calling for information about the thefts, and are urging the public to report any suspicious activity.

PC Chris Ingham, Crime Prevention Officer, said that the thefts constituted, “...a dramatic rise compared to what we have seen before."

Last year only 3 bikes were stolen and 6 in 2015.

They also want people to take more precautions with their bicycles. “A lot of people tell us their bike wasn’t secured when it was stolen. We are trying to ensure that people look after their cycles and take the initial steps to prevent the theft from taking place,” PC Ingham explained.

The Police are therefore reminding people to use proper bike stands, ideally two locks with both wheels as well as the frame secured and to lock the bicycle when it’s kept in a shed or garage.

Islanders are also encouraged to get their bikes marked. They can do so free of charge by popping down to the Police station at any time.

“The bikes are clearly marked so it does help preventing the theft by deterring criminals in the first place,” stated PC Ingham. Marked bikes also have greater chances of being reunited with their owners.
