Butterfly Café staff go silent for sexual abuse survivors

Staff at a local café have embarked on a sponsored silence to raise funds to support their work with survivors of sexual abuse.

The fundraiser, which started yesterday, will see employees of The Butterfly Café remain actively silent for seven hours per day for two consecutive days.

Cheyenne O'Connor, Heidi Marett, Kelly Mills, Daisy Gordon and Sarah-Jane Morgan are all taking part in the challenge.

The Butterfly Café aims to raise £1,000 through this fundraiser to enable support workers to continue assisting survivors of sexual abuse.

Café owner Cheyenne O'Connor said: "Us girls at The Butterfly Café believe that there is nothing more important for survivors than supporting them to break the silence and be able to speak out, be heard and know they will be believed and supported.

"We wanted to take on the challenge to raise awareness of what survivors have to go through in their journey of being silenced and too afraid to speak out.

"We feel it’s important to spread awareness, and it’s something different.

"We welcome you to help us raise much-needed funds so we can continue vital work supporting survivors of sexual abuse across Jersey."

The Butterfly Café not only supports survivors of sexual abuse but also provides job opportunities, workplace training, and a non-judgmental setting for abuse survivors and former prisoners reintegrating into society.

In January, the café launched a "pay it forward" scheme, encouraging islanders to gift pre-paid food or drink to those in need.
