Candlelight vigil for Ukraine

Tuesday 01 March 2022

A candlelight vigil to allow islanders to stand in solidarity with people in Ukraine is taking place in the Royal Square on Friday.

The vigil will start at 18:00 with an address from the Bailiff, Timothy Le Cocq.

The Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend Michael Keirle will lead prayers, The Town Church Bells will then be rung to mark the beginning of a minute’s silence.

Throughout, the States Chamber and Royal Court buildings will be lit up in the colours of the Ukraine flag, blue and yellow.

“War is always a terrible thing and this invasion by Russia of a sovereign democracy has already inflicted great suffering on the Ukrainian people,” the Bailiff commented.

“We can only admire their courage and resolve and do what we can to help.

“We stand together today to say that there is no room for such aggression in the modern world.”
