Capability Brown exhibition all sewn up

Wednesday 06 July 2016

There will be plenty of cushions to plump up next week at an eighteenth century house in town, owned by the National Trust for Jersey.

The Embroiderers's Guild Jersey will be scattering their creations throughout 16 New Street as part of a unique exhibition celebrating 300 years since the birth of landscape architect Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.

The group have hand-embroidered all their cushions, inspired by landscapes and gardens managed by the Trust and will be demonstrating their craft during the exhibition which is running from Wednesday 13 July until Friday 15 July.

There is a talk on the Thursday 14 July at lunchtime by the head of the Embroiderers' Guild Jersey, Beverley Speck, on the Trust's connection with Capability Brown, England's 'greatest gardener' - the man who changed the face of eighteenth century England, creating gardens and parkland and planting woods and farms.

She will also be giving lunch break lessons on how to embroider a button during her Potted Embroidery for Beginners workshop from 1 until 2 pm on Friday 15 July and there is a longer workshop later that afternoon for anyone wanting to learn how to embroider a few more stitches.

You can find out more abut the workshops and book your place here.
