Car hit by falling tree one of five emergency calls during Storm Katie

Tuesday 29 March 2016

Firefighters were called out to five “emergency incidents” on Sunday night and the early hours of Monday morning as Storm Katie battered the Island – including a driver who had a “lucky escape” after his car was hit by a tree.

The teams dealt with a tree that had fallen on top of a car, sections of roofs that had blown off, trees blocking roads and chimneys in danger of falling on to the street.

They said that the driver of a car hit by a tree had amazingly suffered no injuries, and had managed to escape on his own.

Jersey Fire and Rescue Service Watch Commander Paul McGrath said that the team had worked with police, honorary police and paramedics to make sure that everyone was safe.

He said: “This severe weather once again shows the diversity of incidents that Jersey Fire & Rescue is required to respond to.

“The co-ordination and fantastic inter agency working ensured that the Island’s roads were cleared and opened as soon as possible and that damage to properties was made safe in very difficult conditions.”

The calls included:

-       10.14 pm on Sunday night – A motorbike that had fallen over in the wind and which was leaking fuel over the road.

-       11.19 pm on Sunday night – A house that had lost an eight metre by three metre section of a roof that had blown off a house. The house was made safe and the road was closed until the storm abated.

-       00.12 am on Monday morning – A large tree had fallen and blocked the road at La Hougue Bie, needing a chainsaw team to attend to open up the road again.

-       00.59 am on Monday morning – A team en route to deal with damaged fencing in a precarious spot found another tree blocking the road, and called out a second team for back-up.

-       05.56 am on Monday morning – A car had been hit by a tree, but the driver had escaped unharmed. Firefighters had to use hydraulic lifting equipment and chainsaws to get the car clear.
