10 days to go... Will you walk in the shoes of Jersey's homeless?

Tuesday 07 November 2023

A local shelter is inviting islanders to spend a night in the shoes of Jersey’s most vulnerable residents to raise money for homeless men as part of an annual fundraiser which last year raised a record-breaking £65,000 for the charity.

There are just 10 days left to sign up for this year’s 'Sleep Out', which will take place on Friday 17 November in Pier Road car park in aid of Sanctuary Trust.

The charity says that "although it won’t be the most comfortable night you’ve ever spent, it will be one of the most memorable".

More than 90 people slept overnight in the car park last November – exceeding the total raised from all of the previous Sleep Outs combined

Islanders of all ages took part in 2022 – the youngest was 10 years old and the oldest 79, proving that age is no barrier to experiencing what it’s like to sleep rough.

Four States Members also bedded down on cardboard for the night, including the Minster for Housing and Communities Deputy David Warr, Deputy Andy Howell, Deputy Sam Mezec, and Constable Philip Le Sueur.

Participants were catered for with soup made by Year 3 pupils from La Moye Primary School and freshly baked bread by Highlands College. Cooper & Co provided hot drinks to accompany breakfast in the morning.

Sanctuary Trust are once again calling on people to help raise awareness and funds for some of the most vulnerable people in our community by signing up with friends, family and colleagues this year.

There will be buskers to provide entertainment throughout the event, and breakfast rolls with hot tea and coffee in the morning.

Sleep Out 2023 will take place in Pier Road car park from 20:00 on Friday 17 November until 06:00 the next morning.
