Charity runner goes off-road for a month in epic run the length of Britain

A Jerseyman who last year scaled Africa's highest mountain in just 24 hours and has run marathons and ultra marathons is off on his longest run so far - from the top of Scotland to the bottom of England.

Harry McAlinden is running 1,200 miles off-road from John o'Groats to Land's End to help his childhood friend and other Islanders living with brain injuries.

57-year-old Harry said the epic run that starts on Wednesday will take him a month and he'll be carrying his tent and all he needs with him on his back.

Harry said: “I'll be running off-road taking in the West Highland Way and the Penine Way. There’s a group of five of us from the UK and America and we’re all going to be running together and camping at night. I’ve never met them any of them before.

"I’ve been running as much as possible for as long as possible. I’ve been up in Scotland and I’ve done part of the route and I’ve tested myself with the pack on."

Harry met up with his old friend Frank MacFarlane back in 2010 when he was running the London Marathon and has been a supporter and volunteer for Headway Jersey ever since. He's already raised close to £10,000 for the charity.

He said he likes to undertake challenges most would think are near impossible because many of Headway Jersey’s members face massive challenges everyday living with a brain injury.

Headway Jersey will be tracking Harry on his big run and giving daily updates on his progress and you can find out how he’s getting on their Facebook page.

The donations have already started coming in but Harry says he hopes the fundraising 'will grow legs as he keeps running'.

You can donate to help Harry reach his £2,000 target here.
