"Mature" dating gets comedy treatment

Sunday 25 November 2018

Dating might be difficult enough as it is, but what about during the twilight years of life?

It’s the topic of one of a trio of one-act comedy plays put on by three members of the Jersey Amateur Dramatic Club (JADC) this week.

‘Comedy3’, as the evening is called, has given Liz Breen, Sharon Campbell and Lizzie Fisher the chance to try something new, either as a director of cast member. Sharon Campbell, will be directing for the first time, while a number of new faces will take to the stage.

The first play on the menu for the evening of comedy is 'Clara’s on the Curtains' by Arthur Lovegrove, directed by Liz. It follows the misadventures of the Wickley Women’s Guild as they prepare to open their annual show. Clara is the Committee member that is never heard and is coerced into doing things that none of the others will do – and this time it’s being stage manager. The play follows her as she struggles to find which rope to pull, how strong to pull, when to shut and when to open.

The other two plays come from Duets by Peter Quilter, the award-winning West End and Broadway playwright.

JADC described Duets as "a gloriously funny examination of the chaotic world of love, relationships, a hilarious tribute to the strength and madness of the human heart."

Lizzie directed 'Blind Date' in which Jonathon and Wendy navigate the complex world of trying to meet the perfect partner at a mature time of life, while Sharon directs 'Secretarial Skills', focused on a long-serving secretary trying to organise a party for her boss at the last minute.

Comedy3 will take place at the Opera House at 19:30 from 27 to 30 November, and the team hope their performances will help chase islanders’ winter blues away.

They said: "It promises to be a hilarious evening in the intimate environment of the Studio theatre. These three one-act comedies will brighten your mood!"
