Children in Bangladesh bowled over by local cricketers' support

Cricket-crazy children in Bangladesh have been bowled over by the support of Jersey cricketers who have kitted them out with all they need to play the game.

The Jersey Cricket Board has teamed up with local charity Together Making a Difference to send out bags full of stumps, bats, balls, batting and wicket keeping pads to schools in vulnerable communities within the Kurigram district in Northern Bangladesh.

They wanted to help in the country that since being elevated to the top level of the game in 2000, has struggled to beat a top-ranked team although their luck seems to be changing after defeating England in both the 2015 World Cup and the second Test!

TMAD Chairman Helen Wilson said: “Wherever you looked, children and young people found open spaces to show off their cricketing skills. Adults and children were so thankful for the equipment given by the JCB. It was an honour to see the joy and delight on the children’s faces."

JCB Cricket Development Manager Lee Meloy said: “We were delighted to be able to assist Helen and TMAD’s ongoing work within Bangladesh. I hope the donated equipment can inspire young cricketers to take up the sport we love."

Helen Wilson said: "The donation of various equipment gives a great deal of hope and aspiration to many Bangladeshis. The benefit is immeasurable and greatly appreciated by the community.”

TMAD helped support young families in areas of Northern Bangladesh that were severely flooded earlier this year and is looking to provide some basic education for many of the poor children in the area. Islanders have been helping to support them donating money and clothing for babies and young children.

The charity is doing a 'festive' fundraising car wash this Saturday between 09:00 and 14:00 at St Brelade's College to help raise more money for this very poor community in Bangladesh.
