Splash and dash for cash

Sunday 10 March 2019

Up for a challenge? A local charity dedicated to helping children who are disadvantaged or who have special needs is looking for islanders willing to splash and dash to raise some cash for them.

Variety, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is looking for swimmers and runners to take part in challenges to help their fundraising efforts.

Sandra Auckland, Joint Chief Barker for Variety, explained that the charity relies on the generosity of volunteers giving their time to raise funds that help disadvantaged and special needs children in Jersey.

They have secured spaces for the Great North One Mile Swim at Lake Windermere in June, the Great North Run Half Marathon in Newcastle in September and the Royal Parks Half Marathon in London in October and are looking for local athletes to apply.

The charity said the events would be the perfect opportunity for someone starting on their exercise regime and looking for motivation as well as for seasoned athletes hoping for a personal best.

"Taking part is guaranteed to be an amazing experience giving the volunteer a chance to reach their goals, have fun and at the same time raise money for an incredible cause," the team said.

"All sponsorship money raised is guaranteed to go towards making a positive difference to the lives of these children," Mrs Auckland said. "The participants will have a great time taking part in these challenging events and, hopefully, the pride that comes from raising money for a good cause will help make up for any sore muscles."
