Constable standing for the Jersey Alliance

Wednesday 04 May 2022

The Constable of Trinity has announced he will be standing again for election with the Jersey Alliance, arguing that failing to engage with party politics may lead the island "too far to the left of the political spectrum, with disastrous far-reaching consequences."

Philip Le Sueur was first elected to represent the Parish in 2014, and returned to the role following the 2018 election.

He is currently Chair of the Planing Committee, a member of the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission and the Comité des Connétables, and notes on his Declaration of Interests that he is also a member of the Duke of Normandy Masonic Lodge.

On his decision to stand as a party political candidate, the Constable noted that his voting record showed that he was "generally aligned" with other members of the party, which is led by St. Clement Deputy candidate, Sir Mark Boleat.

While Constable Le Sueur acknowledged that "some may feel that a Constable should not be aligned with any political party", he pledged to continue putting Trinity first.

"I fully understand that concern and want to make it clear that in any matter that may directly impact on the Parish of Trinity, I will always put forward and support the best interests of our Parish, irrespective of the Party's position. My fellow Party members know and respect my position," he said.

He continued: "For those who argue that Jersey is not ready for party politics, I would respectfully point that it is nevertheless happening.

"A failure to engage with this potentially monumental change in our political system at this stage may result in us sleepwalking into a situation where Jersey's Government moves too far to the left of the political spectrum, with disastrous far-reaching consequences for our entire island community.

"I hope I have shown that I have carefully considered the compatibility of the role of Constable with political party membership, concluding that they are compatible if handled carefully. I therefore hope that the electorate of the Parish of Trinity will put its trust in me and vote for me in the forthcoming election, knowing that the Parish comes first always."
