Creative opportunity for writers

Wednesday 04 June 2014

A leading creative writing lecturer is coming to Jersey to give a weekend storytelling course for local writers.

Barbara Large is the Founder of the Winchester Writers’ Conference and a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Fellow of the University. She’s being joined by author, Adrienne Dines, and says the course is for everyone who has a story in them – fiction or non-fiction.

Barbara and Adrienne are writers themselves and are passionate about helping and supporting others. Barbara says she is looking forward to coming to the island and meeting local writers: “This course is for those who have a story in the back of their mind and are having difficulty getting it on paper; people who are writing a novel and are stuck in the middle; those wanting to write children’s stories and having difficulty pitching to the right age group, or even people writing non-fiction accounts of their lives.”

The weekend course starts on Friday 27th June and runs through Saturday to 1pm on Sunday 29th. It’s being held at the Jersey Arts Centre.

Barbara is an experienced creative writing lecturer who has worked with successful authors and not only created the Winchester Writers’ Conference but also founded the Writers-in-Residency Scheme in prisons across the UK. Adrienne has written several novels and is an experienced tutor and after-dinner speaker.

The course will look at your approach to writing, how to characterise, structure and plot and how to build tension and suspense. Participants will study good examples of writing and have the opportunity to create some of their own work.

The course costs £110 for non-members and can be booked through the Jersey Arts Centre.
