A Turkish convict has been sent back to France after attempting to smuggle himself to the UK on a boat via Jersey.

The 35-year-old man arrived in Jersey on Tuesday after stowing away on the Victor Hugo, a Manche Iles boat from Granville.

Detected by Customs and Immigration officials, he was questioned at Albert Quay upon arrival.

It later emerged that the man, who has not been named, had already been ejected from the UK over “serious” drugs offences in 2015.

Despite his deportation, Customs officials said that he was trying to get back to the UK, and was using Jersey as a “transit point.”

He was ultimately denied entry to the island due to his deportation order.

“He was returned to Granville on the evening sailing yesterday [Tuesday 28 August],” a States of Jersey spokesperson confirmed.
