Jersey firefighters can now get critical information to Islanders during major incidents – they have joined the Twitter Alerts programme.
Jersey Fire & Rescue is one of 38 UK Fire & Rescue Services who can use Twitter's alerting facility to get information to the public as quickly as possible during a crisis.
Twitter Alerts show up differently in the Twitter feed and are designed to capture users’ attention with an orange bell standing out. Anyone with a twitter mobile app will also be sent a text message with the tweet contents.
Islanders can activate the Alert facility by going to the Jersey Fire & Rescue Twitter home page www.twitter.com/JsyFire/alerts and clicking on the activate alerts button.
Their Twitter Alerts will also be replicated on their Facebook page.
Station Commander Marc Le Cornu said: “Over the last year, social media has changed the way that we get safety information out to the public. Because it is immediate and reaches so many people in such a short time, we have embraced the use of platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
"Twitter is one of our key communication tools and we are delighted to be the first local service to have been recognised and enabled to use Twitter Alerts. There are only 95 organisations in the UK & Ireland that currently have the Twitter Alerts facility."
