Crowdfunding effort to bring home 'devoted father'

A crowdfunding effort to bring home the body of a Jersey man who died in Majorca has raised well over half of its £8,000 target in just four days.

The 29-year-old Etienne Hampton, who was reportedly staying in Magaluf, died in hospital in the Majorcan capital of Palma on 20 June.

The exact circumstances of Etienne death have not yet been confirmed, but comments posted on the crowdfunding page suggest that he died following an incident on a boat trip which resulted in his being given CPR before being taken to hospital in Palma.

The crowdfunding campaign, started by his uncle, Ben Hampton, is in aid of paying for medical expenses, funeral costs and to support Etienne Hampton's four-year-old daughter. The family plan for Etienne to be cremated in Majorca so that his ashes can be returned to Jersey in the next few days.

Posting on the JustGiving page, Ben Hampton wrote: "On the guidance and recommendation from the British Consulate and funeral directors in Jersey, the family agreed for Etienne to be cremated in Majorca, which will enable him to be returned home to Jersey by the end of this week.

"The family are in the process of arranging a memorial service to celebrate his life and will advise everyone of details as soon as they can be confirmed. Thank you to everyone for all your support at this awful time."

Ben Hampton posted on the donation page: "My 29 year old nephew, Etienne Hampton, died on Tuesday 20 June 2017 in Magaluf, Majorca. He leaves behind a much loved four year old daughter.

"Etienne's family would like to give his many friends and colleagues the chance to help pay to bring him back to Jersey for burial and to pay the funeral costs and medical expenses incurred in Majorca."

Ben Hampton added that any additional money would go towards supporting Etienne Hampton's daughter.

As donations and tributes poured in for Etienne Hampton, his uncle later posted: "Wow, just wow. A massive thank you to each and every one of you who has donated already. It means so much to Etienne's family. Simply - thank you all."

Hundreds of islanders have described the 29-year-old as "kind-hearted" and "an incredible dad", whilst sending their condolences to the family.
