They’ve exploded onto the market all set to be one of the hottest presents this Christmas but Jersey riders are being urged to watch out for dodgy hover boards.
Jersey Trading Standards say they’ve sent one self-balancing scooter off for testing after thousands were confiscated in the UK following fears they could explode or catch fire.
Deputy Chief Trading Standards Officer Alison de Bourcier said: "Jersey Trading Standards have checked the stocks of hoverboards that are on sale locally and, while we have no reason to be concerned at this point in time, a sample has nonetheless been sent off for full testing.”
Many seized in the UK didn't have the right plugs or fuses fitted which could make the board overheat and chargers, cabling and batteries have also been failing safety tests.
It's technically illegal to ride the boards on the Island's pavements and roads but Jersey Trading Standards have issued the following advice to anyone planning on riding them:
Never leave the device charging unattended, especially overnight. A faulty cut-off switch means it could overheat.
Let Trading Standards check your plug.
Never use different plugs and cables to charge your device other than those supplied.
Always read and follow safety instructions and warnings that come with the product
If buying online, be careful to check the website is genuine and has a contactable phone number and address.
Always make sure you have a working smoke detector fitted in your home.
Consumers can bring their plugs and charging units into the office in the Central Market, where the team will be able to carry out some basic safety checks.
It doesn’t matter if you purchased the goods locally or online, Trading Standards would still like to hear from you.
If you could also provide us with your contact details, the make, model and where you bought it from we will be able to contact you if there are any further safety developments.
Hoverboards should not be used on roads or pavements. They should only be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission.
If you're worried about your new set of wheels, visit Trading Standards at their office in the Central Market or contact them by phone on 448160 or by emailing Tradingstandards@gov.je
