“Another Night in Vegas” for Durrell – and you could win free tickets!

A year after Durrell ran a spectacular “Las Vegas night” to raise funds for a desperately-needed x-ray machine, they’re going back to the tables to raise money for a purpose-built animal transport vehicle.

They say that transferring animals around is a vital part of caring for them, and with endangered species and some very demanding passengers, they need to make sure that that they are properly looked after.

Friday’s event at the Chart Room at Castle Quay features an amazing lottery with a top prize of a trip to Las Vegas, as well as prizes for stays at the Club Hotel and Spa with dinner at Bohemia, and a case of champagne.

Tickets are meant to cost £25 each – but if you email the Bailiwick Express competition address below, you go into a draw for two freebies.

There’s a serious side of the night, because Durrell urgently need a new vehicle that’s specially-designed to reduce the stress of transport on animals – that means climate and temperature stabilising equipment, noise reduction and suspension capable of ironing out bumpy roads, all while being big enough to carrying the weight of a 200kg-plus gorilla or bear, and a team of support staff.

Durrell’s Head of Animal Collection Mark Brayshaw said: “Durrell is a world leading conservation breeding centre, and in some cases, such as with the Brazilian pied tamarin monkey, has created the foundations of the entire European breeding programme, a ‘safety net’ for the wild.

“With animals as sensitive and critically endangered as these, it’s vital that we get them safely to other institutions with as little stress as possible.

“A specialist vehicle would allow us to do this effectively and be a huge benefit to our mission.”
