Elevated boardwalk will make harbour safer for cyclists and walkers

Wednesday 22 February 2017

Jersey’s Department of Infrastructure wants to build an elevated boardwalk at St Helier Harbour to link existing walking and cycling tracks and improve safety in the area.

At the moment there are two ‘gaps’ in the route stretching from Corbiere in the west to Gorey in the East – one alongside the English Harbour, the other alongside the French Harbour.

Later this year the Department of Infrastructure plan to ‘plug’ the English Harbour gap by widening the current road and creating a 1.8m dedicated pavement/cycleway.

But, because the road is narrower at the French Harbour the problem isn’t as easy to solve. It’s also complicated because the sea wall is a listed structure.

The scheme the department has come up with is an elevated boardwalk that will be flush with the road and ‘hang over’ the slipway that gives access to the harbour.

The Department for Infrastructure are holding a drop in session at the slipway between 16:00 and 18:00 on Wednesday 1 March to gather the public’s views on the proposals.
