Faulks and YouTube magician mark new chapter for literary festival

Sunday 01 May 2022

Acclaimed author Sebastian Faulks and a YouTube magician with millions of fans will be among the special guests relaunching Jersey’s Festival of Words at Howard Davis Park after a two-year hiatus.

Featuring talks, workshops and competitions, the literary event will be running between 21 and 25 September, taking place at a ‘festival village’ including a 400-seat marquee in the town park.

Most events will be taking place in the park, but Jersey Arts Centre, the Library and Catel Fort will also be playing host to some.

The first tranche of festival events includes talks and interviews with writers including international bestselling author Sebastian Faulks CBE, author and journalist Sarfraz Manzoor and historian Tracy Borman.

Also confirmed to be joining the festival is 18 year-old magician and YouTube and Tiktoker Dan Rhodes.

Festival Chair Jennifer Bridge said: "Given the continued closure of the Jersey Opera House we've been forced to think creatively.

"The move to a marquee in Howard Davis Park presents an opportunity to encapsulate the literary festival tent tradition while also refreshing and enlivening the festival after the covid-enforced pause."

She added: "We look forward forward to welcoming back our familiar festival goers and encouraging a new audience at this exciting new venue."

As well as receiving funding support from the Jersey Community Foundation and Highvern, it also has the backing of Government.

"We want to help the festival dust itself down from the disruption of covid and enable it to take the next steps in its growth and evolution," said Assistant Minister with responsibility for culture, Deputy Kirsten Morel.
