Passenger "smashed bottle over man's head" on Condor - witness

Tuesday 07 July 2015

A witness has told how a passenger on Condor's Liberation "flipped" during a drunken row with his girlfriend on Sunday night and smashed a bottle of wine over another man's head.

A 21 year-old man has now been charged with assault after the attack on board the sailing from Jersey to Guernsey and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Neil Cotillard, who's from Jersey, was on board travelling to the UK at the time.

He said: "It was in the smoking area at the back right hand corner, there was a drunk guy, mid 20's I'd say, he was drinking wine straight from the bottle, having a domestic with a girl, she was grabbing him by the face and shouting in his face and then something happened and the guy took the bottle and smashed it over this other man's head, I don't think the man he assaulted was even part of the group.

"There was about ten of them in the group, I'm surprised they were allowed on the boat,

"He just flipped and all hell broke loose."

Mr Cotillard said the bottle smashed all over the floor and down the staircase but said it didn't look like the man who was assaulted was too hurt.

He said the police came on board in Guernsey and the man was arrested and escorted off the boat.

Guernsey Police say the man is now on bail and is due to appear in the Magistrate’s Court on 20 July.
