Firefighters are warning Islanders to make sure that they have a working smoke alarm after the early detection of a fire in a town flat prevented serious damage and risk to the occupiers.
A smoke detector was set off by unattended cooking left in the first floor flat at around 1.45 pm yesterday, and a neighbour called the fire service.
Nine firefighters attended and found the flat heavily smoke logged – they had to use breathing apparatus and a high pressure hose reel to tackle the incident, and a mechanical fan to clear the smoke.
Crew Commander Craig Channing said that the incident highlighted the need for working smoke detectors.
He said: “This incident highlights the importance of how a working smoke detector can alert the occupier, or in this case the neighbour of the property, to a fire in the very early stages to ensure everyone can evacuate the building before a fire takes hold.
“Members of the public are urged to contact the Fire and Rescue Service should they have any questions relating to their family’s’ fire safety at home.”
