Fire in the refuge tipping bunker at the Energy from Waste Plant

Sunday 11 September 2016

At 07:13 today firefighters were called to the Energy From Waste Plant at Le Collette after a fire had broken out in the refuge tipping bunker.

Two fire engines with nine firefighters were immediately sent to the incident and on arrival the fire crews faced a large amount of smoke and flames coming from within the bunker.

Waste plant staff had managed to hold the fire back with hose reels, before firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the structure and tackled the blaze using large water jets.

Working together with on-site staff the incident was brought under control quickly. The Fire Service stayed on scene for over two hours damping down the affected waste.

Watch Commander Richard Ryan said: “It is important to remember when disposing of rubbish certain items are not to be mixed with general house hold waste.”
