Pensioner uses army training to fight fire in his home

Thursday 15 February 2018

A Jersey pensioner used his army training to deal with a fire in his home in Trinity last night.

It's believed that the fire started in a food smoking machine, which had been left on for too long, causing a fire in a conservatory.

Fire fighters were called just before 22:00, but the pensioner had already used buckets of water to put out the “extensive” fire.

The home owner had been alerted to the fire by a smoke detector which set off an alarm at the same time as the electric supply had tripped.

Daniel Laurens from Jersey's Fire Service said “The elderly gentleman did amazingly well to extinguish the fire and he relied on the fire training he had received from his time in the Army. I would advise people to get out, stay out and call 999.”
