The funeral "finale" for a former comedian and footballer is set to be held in Jersey today, with attendees expected to wear bright clothes and be "full of humour".

The funeral of Charlie Daze, who died in Jersey earlier this month, will take place at St Martin's Church from 11:30 on Tuesday 27 August.

The ceremony is to be live-streamed on YouTube.

Charlie Daze – born Charles Douglas – grew up in Portadown in Northern Ireland, where he played football professionally for Portadown FC.

He became a comedian when his footballing career ended at the age of 17.

Charlie spent years on the UK's comedy circuit, both solo and as part of comedy group The Three Days.

He won the talent show 'Opportunity Knocks' five times, and appeared on ITV series 'The Comedians' as well as on an episode of Bergerac.

Having moved to Jersey in 1991 with his Jersey-born wife Patrice, Charlie left his mark on the island's football community.

He set up a football school, established a partnership between St Ouen FC and Leeds United, and was the Leeds United talent scout for the Channel Islands.

Charlie's son Scott said: “Dad had a zest for life, and his infectious laugh and desire to entertain brought joy to many.”

Instead of flowers, Charlie's family have been fundraising for Jersey children's charity Variety, which Charlie supported through the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

The fundraiser is available on JustGiving and has raised almost £900 already.
