Gov completes confidence vote reshuffle

Monday 30 November 2020

Jersey's government has announced a new group of Assistant Ministers to replace the ones who stood down earlier this month as part of their support for a 'no confidence' vote in the Chief Minister.

Deputy Montfort Tadier, and Senators Sam Mézec and Steve Pallet resigned from government roles in protest, and supported Senator Kristina Moore in her ultimately unsuccessful attempt to unseat Senator John Le Fondré from the top job.

Subsequently, the States agreed to appoint Deputy Jeremy Maҫon as Minister for Children and Housing.

Now, the Government has announced that Deputies Trevor Pointon, Jess Perchard, and Kirsten Morel have all been appointed as Assistant Ministers.

Deputy Perchard will be appointed as an Assistant Minister for the Environment. The Government says she will be helping to cover the wider environment regulation portfolio, including the climate emergency, Island Plan, carbon neutrality, pollution control and other green policy issues. She will also be conducting a piece of work for the Chief Minister on the impact of social media on school children.

The Deputy of St John, Trevor Pointon, will be appointed Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services, with particular responsibility for mental health. He has also been appointed as an Assistant Minister for Children and Housing, with responsibility for mental health in children.

And one of the strongest critics of the government to date, Deputy Kirsten Morel is now to be appointed Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture. He has frequently clashed in scrutiny hearings with his new boss, Senator Lyndon Farnham.

The Government says Deputy Morel will have particular responsibility for:

  • Culture, Arts and Heritage.
  • Retail economy and strategy.
  • Lottery and gambling policy.
  • Liquor licensing policy.
  • Aircraft and shipping registries.
  • Public records Law and Jersey Archive.

He will formally take up the role once Scrutiny commitments have been completed.

Finally, Deputy Hugh Raymond will be appointed Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, with particular responsibility for:

  • Sport
  • Beach Lifeguard Service

He will retain his responsibilities as Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services and for Infrastructure.
