Guernsey broadcaster appears on German TV

Monday 28 October 2024

A Channel Island broadcaster and musician appeared in a German television crime drama this week.

Jim Delbridge, who has worked at BBC Guernsey and Island FM, made his television debut on Wednesday in the role of an ageing rock star.

The episode of 'Watzmann Ermittelt', which translates to 'Mountain Murders', aired on Germany's main channel, Das Erste.

The series, which has drawn millions of viewers since its launch in 2019, centres on two contrasting detectives – a traditional Bavarian officer and his inner-city partner – as they learn to work together despite their different approaches to policing.

In the most recent episode, Mr Delbridge portrayed Jason Gribb, an ageing rock star who surprises the senior detective's wife at her birthday party.

During his scene, he performed his own composition 'Bring It On' from his album 'The Navigator'.

The opportunity came through his brother John, a German TV director, who reached out in 2022 when the production needed an urgent replacement.

"They needed someone to play an ageing rock star who can sing, and they had to be cheap, so he thought of me," joked Mr Delbridge.

The role represents a return to German media for Mr Delbridge, who toured the country as a musician in the 1980s.

His previous work includes composing the theme music for the hospital drama 'St Angela' and creating over 100 songs for a children's English-language education programme in Germany.

While his screen time was brief, the appearance builds on Mr Delbridge's long-standing connection with German entertainment.

"I jumped on a plane and spent a long weekend on set. It was a real eye-opener," he said.
