How now brown… milk carton?

Friday 07 February 2020

It’s out with the old and in with the ‘moo’ as Jersey Dairy gives its milk cartons a fresh look, modelled on the brown coats of the local cow breed.

The new, more ‘ecow’ friendly cartons will be hitting the shelves over the next few weeks as the former packaging is put out to pasture.

The new look also brings with it a new environmental accreditation, making Jersey Dairy the first dairy in the world to hold the ‘LEAF Marque’ – a sustainable farming seal of approval.

Commenting on the launch, the dairy’s Managing Director Eamon Fenlon said: “The LEAF Marque – which stands for Linking Environment and Farming – is only awarded when every single step of the food chain, from the grass in the fields to the glass on the table are of the highest standards.

“This includes soil and water management, energy efficiency, high animal welfare and nature conservation. LEAF is the gold standard recognition for sustainable farming. Our new packaging is another step in ensuring we maintain the very highest standards in everything we do.

“Jersey consumers enjoy milk that has travelled less than nine miles from the farm before it arrives on the shelf in store, so it’s always very fresh.”

The new cartons will also keep the traditional colours of blue, green, orange and yellow for the different skimmed and whole milk versions and the organic range will have black colouring.

They also use plastics from sugarcane, reducing the carbon footprint of each package by 22%.

The dairy says: “This new carton will be the first in the UK and the Channel Islands and is a step in the right direction while recycling resources in Jersey for Tetra Pak products remain limited.”
