Criticism prompts disability improvements at ice rink

Improvements are being made at the Weighbridge ice rink after the attraction came under fire for its accessibility.

Concerns were raised on social media about the removal of sit-on karts, which were previously used by some disabled children to skate on the rink run by the States of Jersey Development Company-run.

JDC explained the sit-on karts, known as banana rides, were "not designed or intended as disability aids" and were withdrawn last year due to safety concerns after being misused by teenagers and adults.

"We understand the frustration of not having access to the banana rides this year and truly apologise for any disappointment caused," a spokesperson said.

They went on to confirm that the company was now exploring "the introduction of purpose-built, disability skate aids", which they said "will be specifically designed to provide the necessary support and meet appropriate safety and insurance standards".

The spokesperson continued: "Our aim is to ensure the ice rink is as inclusive as possible.

"We are currently in the process of thoroughly researching and vetting potential solutions to ensure they are safe, effective, and meet our visitors' needs."

Among the other accessibility concerns highlighted by social media users was the lack of what they deemed to be appropriate disabled toilets. Visitors complained that current facilities require users to access a portable toilet outside the back of the main venue.

Sean Pontin, CEO of disability charity Enable Jersey, said: "There is no way other groups would be marginalised like this. Having to go outside in all weathers and in front of everyone!"

Following feedback, JDC said it had relocated the portable disabled facilities to the front of the rink and arranged for visitors to use accessible facilities at the nearby Pomme d'Or Hotel.

The spokesperson said: "The disabled toilets need to be sited in a position to enable them to be maintained and serviced, and following feedback from last year, they were discreetly located outside and to the side of the marquee. However, as of Monday, we have moved them to the front of the rink to ensure they are more visible."

Enable Jersey is now working with JDC to improve accessibility.

"We are very keen to help and work with them to increase their awareness and make sure they have the input of the disabled community in their new plans for the waterfront," Mr Pontin said.
