Island Energy have confirmed that they are "not in a position" to start bringing the island's gas supply back tomorrow as had initially been hoped.
In an update this afternoon, the gas supplier explained that "we need to ensure that all our processes are being followed correctly to get supply back".
Vulnerable and commercial customers will be prioritised in what Island Energy described as a stage-by-stage approach to restoring supply, which will take "several days".
Since Saturday morning, thousands of homes have been unable to use hot water, while scores of restaurants and takeaway businesses across the island to close or limit their operations as they could not use their gas cookers due to the failure.
Earlier today, Island Energy's CEO Jo Cox urged domestic gas customers to help themselves, and the 4,000 other households on gas, to get reconnected to the mains by turning a lever by their meter and registering that they have done it.
She said that by doing so, the mains supply could be turned back on this evening. However, this afternoon, Island Energy confirmed that they are "not in a position" to start bringing the gas supply back tomorrow.

The full statement explained: “We’re still working on restoring gas supply to your homes and businesses. The safety of our customers is our top priority, and we need to ensure that all our processes are being followed correctly to get supply back.
“We are not in a position to start bringing this back tomorrow as we had hoped, and we apologise for this. We will keep you updated via local media, our website, Facebook and Twitter feeds.
"We continue to ask for your help in getting supply back by following the simple instructions below:
1. Make sure all gas appliances are switched off (boiler, cooker, fire etc)
