New monthly meet-up for queer women and non-binary people

Thursday 08 August 2024

Queer women and non-binary people are being encouraged to attend a newly-launched meet-up that aims to provide a welcoming and supportive space for LGBTQ+ islanders.

A new monthly gathering called 'Les Beans' has been launched by Shev Fogart in a bid to fill a gap in the local queer community – with the first session being held at Forum Pub tonight.

Shev created Les Beans after realising the lack of LGBTQ+ spaces in Jersey, particularly for those looking for friendship and community in a relaxed setting.

She said: "I remembered coming home to Jersey as an adult, and I really struggled with the lack of spaces to make friends.

"While I'm now married to a wonderful woman, I remember how lonely and lost I felt, and I don't want anyone else to feel that way."

She said Les Beans is designed for people who are shy, find clubbing overwhelming, are older, or are simply looking for friends and community.

"We are aimed at all LGBT women and non-binary people who would find value in a supportive women's group," said Shev.

"In a world that feels increasingly hostile to minorities, it's so important that we can find and support each other."

Shev said she encourages anyone interested to join the meet-up, even if they feel nervous or don't have a friend to come along with.

She said: "If there is someone who wants to come but feels nervous, or doesn't have a friend to come along with, come anyway. I will talk to you. I want you to be there. You matter.

"It might feel hard, walking in a room full of people you don't know, but even if you arrive not knowing anyone, we will do our best to make sure you leave having made new friends."

The meet-up will take place on the second Thursday of each month upstairs at the Forum pub, and will start at 19:00.

Those interested in attending Les Beans can find more information on the LGBTQ Jersey Facebook group.
