WATCH: Jersey has its hottest ever day and night

Tuesday 19 July 2022

Thunderstorms are on their way after Jersey had its hottest ever day and night.

Just before 15:00 yesterday afternoon, the temperature at Maison St. Louis Observatory and Jersey Airport surpassed the all-time record of 36.0 degrees.

Records began in 1894 at the observatory and at the airport in 1951.

Temperatures continued to rise, peaking at 37.9 degrees celsius at Maison St. Louis - 1.9 above the previous record.

Howard Davis Farm recorded a top temperature of 36.3, while Jersey Airport recorded 37.8.

It was so warm that some local businesses decided to shut up shop.

As a result of the heat and staff shortages, the HideOut was among the venues to decide against serving hot food.

Jersey Zoo had a novel way of helping its residents deal with the heat - giving out special animal ice lollies.

The Fire and Rescue Service were also keen to look out for local creatures suffering in the heat.

They helped a hedgehog discovered struggling after they had dealt with a barbecue fire.

And the warmth continued throughout the evening.

The Jersey Met Office reported this morning: "It’s been an exceptionally warm night at Maison St. Louis Observatory, with the temperature not dropping below 27°C so far.

"To put this into context, that’s 5°C above the average max daytime temperature we would expect in mid-July."

Officially declaring the warmest night at the Observatory since records began this morning, they added: "The Maison St. Louis minimum temperature over the last 24 hours was 25.5°C, beating the previous record of 22.3°C recorded in August 2003 (by 3.2°C).

"The minimum temperature for other official sites are Jersey Airport: 19.7°C. Howard Davis Farm 26.2°C."

However, today is likely to see the island's sunshine run - which saw it officially categorised as being in 'absolute drought' - finally come to an end.

A thunderstorm warning has now been issued.
