A breathtaking first-half performance elevated Jersey to a final position of seventh in this season’s Greene King IPA Championship – the Reds' highest finish in the second tier of English rugby.
Five tries in the first half and one in the last minute of the game ensured Jersey beat Moseley 40-21 – the first time the Islanders have got the better of the Birmingham side.
For the first 40 minutes, Jersey were unstoppable – their mauls effective, their backs darting and strong.
Flanker Ryan Hodson and wing Fautua Otto scored two apiece and prop Sam Lockword also grounded the ball after a probing run from the Samoan.
At half time, it was 33-0 to the Reds, with a bonus point already in the bag.
Whether it was tiredness or perhaps resting of their laurels, Jersey allowed Moseley to come back in the second half and they dominated large chunks of play, scoring three tries all from open play.
At 33-21 with ten minutes to go, the visitors could taste an upset but Jersey pushed Moseley up the field and it was Jersey who had the final say – Joel Dudley profiting from a poor Moseley kick over the Jersey line to sprint over in the corner from 15 metres out.
Full-back Aaron Penberthy – once again – slotted in a last-minute conversion from a difficult angle.
Attendance at St Peter was 2,372. Man of the match was Paula ‘PK’ Kaho.
Jersey moved up a place to seventh after Cornish Pirates lost 27-5 at Yorkshire Carnegie.
The final match of the season will be the Siam Cup, next Saturday at St Peter.
