Jersey boosts covid testing as official case numbers reach 1,218

Jersey's Government is restarting community PCR testing at the airport in reaction to the increasing number of covid cases in the island.

The new facility will be in the arrivals building, next to where incoming passengers are currently being swabbed.

This afternoon, the official number of confirmed cases in Jersey reached 1,218, which includes 3 people being treated in hospital with the virus, and 11,823 people classed as 'direct contacts' and who will need to have a PCR test.

The PCR 'drive through' testing facility at the airport was closed in August, following a reduced demand for the tests. 

The government says the new airport facility, which adds to the one at the Elizabeth Harbour, will provide up to 300 additional testing appointments per day, with islanders being able to park in a free 30-minute short stay carpark next to the arrivals building.

Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Richard Renouf, said: “The new testing service at the airport arrivals hall will provide a capacity of up to 300 additional appointments every day for Islanders who are in need of a PCR test. I am pleased we will be able to provide these additional tests at a time when we are seeing increased demand as cases rise.

“I would like to thank the teams involved who continually work flexibly to ensure testing demand is met when it’s needed the most."
