Walk two marathons in ten days

Sunday 02 August 2020

Islanders are being challenged to take 100,000 steps over ten days - the equivalent of two marathons - to help islanders with brain tumours.

Jersey Brain Tumour Charity's (JBTC) third annual 'Count Your Steps' challenge from is part of a bigger picture aligned with the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA), which has set a target to get around the world as many times as possible.

The charity, which supports anyone affected by a brain tumour diagnosis either directly or indirectly, would like their supporters to sign up via a dedicated link to help raise awareness of the effects of a brain tumour diagnosis whilst also raising some of the money that it needs to keep its essential services going.

Last year’s challenge saw the combined walkers' steps from Jersey reach almost through Kazakhstan.

Whilst doing their steps, the JBTC has encouraged participants to adhere to social distancing guidelines as set out by the Government of Jersey and to keep themselves hydrated.

"As ever, the challenge for JBTC was to find an idea that can raise awareness, raise much-needed funds and also encourage its clients and supporters to keep active," said JBTC Chairman Warren Simmons.

"This is definitely a fun event as we realise that with a lot of us living increasingly busy lives, it can be harder to keep active."

The JBTC has offered two opportunities to walk. The first walk is during the summer holidays so that families can get involved whilst the second walk will take place in term time. There is, of course, nothing stopping anyone from taking part in both challenges.

The challenge is taking part in two parts: part one between 22 and 31 August, and Part 2 between 5 and 14 September.
