Jersey hosts ADHD conference with experts and islanders

Thursday 10 October 2024

Mental health experts, teachers, and islanders with lived experience of ADHD are due to come together today for a conference about the condition.

The 'ADHD in the Channel Islands' event will be held at the Rosiere Suite of St Brelade's Bay Hotel today.

The conference aims to provide insights into ADHD from medical, educational, and personal perspectives.

Topics will include lived experiences of ADHD, assessment standards, treatment options, the role of ADHD in primary care and education, and the positive aspects of the condition.

The event is being organised by Dr Jane Sedgwick-Müller, Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead for Mental Health Nursing.

She explained: "We are acutely aware of the lengthy wait times to access specialist clinics for ADHD, not only in the Channel Islands but across the UK; the global shortages of ADHD medications; lack of non-pharmacological interventions; and stigma and misperceptions about ADHD being over-diagnosed or being a fad.

"The conference will emphasise the need to learn, talk and share best practices, including innovative ideas or solutions for tackling the crisis in ADHD care and treatment, with leading experts and professionals in the field.

"We empathise with the people with ADHD, including their family members and supporters, we hear their voices, and we are suffering just the same in a crisis none of us could for-see.

"The conference is about listening, reflecting and learning from each other – speakers and delegates alike."

Key speakers at the conference include Philip Asherson from King's College London, who will address whether ADHD is a real medical condition, and Dietmar Hank, Consultant Psychiatrist from the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust, who will discuss common mental and physical health comorbidities associated with ADHD.

The conference will run from 08:15 to 16:30 today, with a registration fee of £100.
