Jersey aid group "monitoring" disasters in Libya and Morocco

Wednesday 13 September 2023

Jersey Overseas Aid says it is keeping a close eye on the impact of the devastating floods in the east of Libya and the major earthquake in Morocco to see what relief might be needed.

At least 30,000 people have been displaced as a result of the flooding in Libya, where the death toll continues to rise - more than 5,000 bodies had been recovered as of this morning.

It comes just days after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake stretching from the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakesh killed around 3,000 people in Morocco.

A JOA spokesperson said: "JOA is receiving regular updates regarding the relief effort in Libya following the devastating floods in the east of the country. We are aware that local Libyan Red Crescent are on the ground responding to the flooding, including providing first aid to those injured and emotional support to people in shock.

"We will continue to monitor the situation to understand the extent of the needs and how best can potentially support those in need.

"We also continue to monitor the situation in Morocco."
