Les Quennevais showers set to reopen next week

Sunday 06 October 2024

Les Quennevais Sports Centre showers, which have been closed for a month due to "unsatisfactory" water quality test results, are expected to reopen next week.

The Government said the treatment of the water system had been successful and showers are expected to reopen early next week once the final water tests are completed.

In a statement on 6 September, Active Jersey said the closure was expected to last around three weeks and advised customers to shower elsewhere until the water was treated and retested.

Last month, the Infrastructure Department confirmed that low counts of legionella bacteria were found in some shower water samples during routine testing following refurbishment work that took place over the summer.

In a statement issued on Friday, Infrastructure Minister Andy Jehan said: “Following treatment of the water that services the showers at Les Quennevais two weeks ago, I am pleased to confirm that the treatment was successful and the initial test was clear of legionella species.

“It is best practice to secure three negative tests, and we are in the process of completing those additional tests.”

He continued: “To enable the use of some showers we have ordered specialist filters which will remain in place until we have the third consecutive set of negative results.

“We hope to take receipt of these later this week, in order to reopen the showers that service the pool areas early next week.

“There is already one installed in the accessible shower area which can now be used.”

The problem with the showers follows a series of maintenance works at the sport facility in recent months, including repairs to steel columns and electrical upgrades.

The swimming pools were closed from 15 July to 2 September for roof repairs, while the first-floor gym and spinning room were shut from 22 July to 5 August for electrical work.

In April, the entire building was temporarily closed due to power supply issues.
