Local vets raise funds for Mind Jersey through ‘Movember’ campaign

Saturday 02 November 2024

A group of local vets are taking part in an annual men’s health campaign this month to raise awareness of the mental health struggles faced by those in the profession whilst raising money for a local charity.

Nine members of the New Era team – which cares for pets, farm animals, and horses at their St Saviour hospital, and Archway and Leodis surgeries – have joined the global 'Movember' movement.

This initiative encourages participants to grow a moustache during the month of November to spark conversations about a variety of men’s issues.

The New Era team's goal is to raise funds for local charity Mind Jersey, whilst also raising awareness of mental health issues that are particularly prevalent in the veterinary profession.

Vet Ralph Maalouf, who heads up New Era’s large animal team, said: “We were inspired by the annual Movember initiative to do the fundraising and felt it was important to support a local charity.

“We thought Mind Jersey was the perfect choice because it does such great work to help people in our local community."

He added: “Mental health is also an issue that’s close to our hearts as the veterinary profession has one of the highest suicide rates.

“While people are talking more about their mental health, men are more likely to keep their emotions bottled up and we want to spread the message far and wide that it is ok to ask for help and there are people out there who can help and support you.”

The team will be posting regular updates on their moustache progress via social media, as well as collecting donations through Mind Jersey's JustGiving page and donation boxes in the reception areas of their three practice locations.
