Long-serving justice civil servant standing for election

Tuesday 29 March 2022

A long-serving public servant specialised in justice and autism charity supporter has announced her intention to stand for election in the parish of St. Brelade.

Autism Jersey Vice-Chair Dr Helen Miles, who lived and attended school in the parish as a child and returned in 2000, spent more than three decades working across Customs and Immigration, Probation, and Policing.

She also holds a PhD in Social Sciences, specialising in justice and Jersey’s Honorary Police and Parish Hall Enquiry system, and was recently an independent member of the Public Accounts Committee.

If elected, Dr Miles says she will seek improvements to the Les Quennevais precinct area, the Elephant Park and Red Houses.

She also wishes to protect the parish’s coastline from further development.

She said Jersey needs “strong leadership and proven experience” to put it “back on track” in the face of various social and economic challenges.

“A different approach is required – one that is rooted in an understanding of our island community and a knowledge of what works best for Jersey,” she said.

Dr Miles added: “If elected, I will pursue community-based policies and work collaboratively and collectively with colleagues across the political spectrum to achieve positive change for St Brelade and for Jersey.”

Jersey's election is due to take place in June.
