Six-figure donation helps fund support worker for homelessness charity

Saturday 28 October 2023

An organisation which provides care and support for homeless islanders has received a six-figure cash boost from a charitable foundation.

The award of almost £110,000 to Sanctuary Trust from Lloyds Bank Foundation for the Channel Islands is the largest to be made by the foundation in recent years.

The money will be used to fund the salary of a support worker for three years, and forms part of a total of £601,000 donated to charities in Jersey and Guernsey so far in 2023 by the Lloyds Bank Foundation.

Sanctuary Trust provides 24-hour care and support to homeless men in Jersey who are going through difficult times and are vulnerable.

This work includes finding employment, securing voluntary opportunities and accommodation, moves which enable those affected achieve independence.

Sarah Tumelty, General Manager, said: “Unfortunately, the number of men in need in Jersey is high and many fall through the cracks for much of their young adult lives with little support.

“Our aim is to make people realise that it is not too late to find hope and make changes to improve their quality of life, whilst building positive relationships – this grant will allow us to continue investing in fantastic support workers who add to our dynamic team to better the lives of those who come through our doors.”

Philippa Stahelin, Chair of the Lloyds Bank Foundation, added: “It continues to be a challenging time for charities. As the cost-of-living crisis continues to spread through the islands, the need for care and support remains at the forefront for both charities and their users.

"The work the foundation does is integral in ensuring they can continue to manage, despite the challenges they face.”

A total of 14 charities have been helped so far this year, including eight other organisations in Jersey: Beresford Street Kitchen, Brighter Futures, Brightly, Caritas Jersey, Every Child Our Future, Family Mediation Jersey, Jersey Eating Disorder Support, and the Jersey Employment Trust.
