Pubgoer admits to decade-old glass assault

Wednesday 26 September 2018

A man who glassed someone in the face ten years ago, before leaving the island, is to be finally sentenced for his assault in the Royal Court.

35-year-old Kenneth Chalk appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning, facing a charge of grave and criminal assault, which occurred a decade ago.

The court heard that in 2008, Chalk started arguing with another man in the Royal Yacht Hotel and then shoved a pint glass into his face. Attempts were made to arrest Chalk, but he swiftly left the island.

However, on 8 September of this year, Chalk was involved in another incident in which he punched another man and forced him to the ground in the Weighbridge area and he was arrested.

As the incident in 2008 was caught on CCTV, it was subsequently discovered that Chalk was the same man from the glassing offence.

Although the injuries sustained from the glassing were described by the Police legal advisor as “mercifully minor”, it was ruled that the case was too serious to be sentenced by the Magistrate’s Court and therefore must be heard in the Royal Court.

Chalk has been remanded in custody until he appears in the Royal Court on 5 November.
