Marathon organisers thank last-minute marshals... but 15 still needed

Tuesday 26 September 2023

Marathon organisers are "super grateful" for the "amazing response" they have received following a call for last-minute volunteers to help marshal the course this weekend – but have admitted they are still looking for 15 more islanders to step up.

Those interested in marshalling can attend a briefing tonight at the St Helier Town Hall, where organisers will run through the role requirements in detail and answer any questions prospective volunteers may have.

Course marshals guide and support the runners during the race, motivating them and keeping them safe.

The Jersey Marathon – which takes place this year on Sunday 1 October – needs 160 course marshals in total.

While 25 volunteers have generously stepped forward since the "urgent" call for marshals last week, the race organisers are seeking a further 15 individuals to complete the team.

In response to a Jersey Marathon social media call for helpers, a local runner said he was meant to participate but would volunteer instead if "push comes to shove."

He explained: "I'm due to run it, been training hard and can't wait – but I'm also very much aware of the lack of volunteers at the moment across both the charity and event sectors."

"[I] would rather most enjoy it," he added.

Potential marshals need no previous experience but should be available between four and seven hours on race day.

Marshals will be provided with training and lunch.

There is a marshal briefing on Tuesday 26 September at 18:30 at the St Helier Town Hall to clarify the role and address any questions.
