Minister "very optimistic" Super League Triathlon will happen

Thursday 11 March 2021

The Economic Development Minister said he is “very optimistic” that islanders will see the return of Super League Triathlon to Jersey this year.

The event is currently scheduled to take place in September, though officials are waiting till the end of April to confirm.

The world series event brings together some of the world’s best triathletes to compete in an intensive race around the island, as part of a £1.25m five-year deal between Super League and Jersey's Government, beginning in 2017.

Senator Lyndon Farnham told Express: “We are very optimistic that the Super League Triathlon will be able to take place in Jersey this year.

“This will depend on the covid situation both here and in the areas where the athletes are training."

He added: “We will make a further announcement as soon as we are in a position to confirm that the event will go ahead.

"The Super League Triathlon is scheduled to take place in late September."

A spokesperson for the Triathlon similarly said that they were also hopeful the event would take place, but would wait until the end of April before confirming arrangements.

“We are very much looking forward to returning once it is safe to do so and hope to be back in 2021. We are in the process of arranging our Championship Series events which will take place after the Olympics and aim to give more clarity at the end of April,” they said.

They added: “...The situation is constantly evolving and that we still have some time between now and the likely calendar for the Championship Series.

“We are also keen to be very respectful of our host communities, all of whom have different requirements and expectations.”

Though last year’s triathlon was cancelled due to covid, RBC challenged islanders to do the equivalent of the 100,000 km Triathlon in exercise, after their initial pledge to donate £20,000 to Mind Jersey for 20,000 km swam, cycled, ran or walked was smashed within a week.
